Owerri zone charts new developmental course
…As group sets up 40-man
committee
Chief Iwuanyanwu |
Piqued by the slow pace of
transformation in the Imo East Senatorial District which has provoked poverty
and destitution among the people, a Socio-Cultural Organization-“Owerri People
Assembly” has inaugurated a 40-man committee to chart a new developmental
course aimed to transform the area.
The
committee which is composed of sons and daughters of repute and integrity of
Owerri zone extraction drawn from various fields of human endeavours, is
required to evolve measures and strategies that would liberate the zone from
its current state of abyss in growth and in development.
Inaugurating
the committee in Owerri, a renowned politician and member, Board of Trustees (BoT)
of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu regretted that
no indigene of Owerri zone has held exalted and managerial position in
government in the past sixteen years.
As a
zone that has the capital of the state which plays host to people from within
and outside the state, Chief Iwuanyanwu insisted that the Owerri zone should
not be compelled to play a second fiddle in both state and national politics.
“We have not been in government for a long
time but we should not fold our hands and allow this to continue. Today, we are
aging, the younger ones will definitely take over from us and we should lay a
strong foundation for them”, he stated
Lamenting
the crushing level of poverty ravaging the zone, Chief Iwuanyanwu said that the
Assembly had resolved to remedy the nagging problem through aggressive rural
development programmes in order to touch the lives of the people.
Iwuanyanwu
who is popularly known by his traditional title of Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo added that the Assembly which has established
branches in some states of the federation and abroad had concluded plans to
honour some indigenes of Owerri who had distinguished themselves in their
chosen careers and with acts of charity.
Responding
on behalf of the Chairman of the committee – Chief Sam Obaji, the deputy
chairman, Professor Henry Njoku expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed
in them through their appointment and promised that they would live up to
expectation.
