As
the world marked this year’s International Day for Older Persons on 1st
October, 2017, a nongovernmental organization (NGO), Off The Hook Foundation
for Rural Dwellers has celebrated the day with old people in Imo at the St
Andrews Anglican Church, Ahiara, Ahiazu Mbaise LGA.
Speaking
during the thanksgiving service by the NGO, the founder, Ugoeze (Lady) Chigbo
Nwamara disclosed that the NGO was set up to cater to the needs of the rural
dwellers especially children, women, youths and the elderly.
She
revealed that plans are underway to provide a befitting old people’s home,
which will take care of the aged persons in the society, adding that they have
come to fete the elderly and share love with them no matter how little.
In
his remarks, husband of the founder and traditional ruler of Umueze Chokoneze
autonomous community in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA, HRH Eze (Sir) Mike Nwamara said
they decided to hold the church thanksgiving service at St Andrews Anglican
Church Ahiara because the Vicar, Ven Betram Ogoke has given the NGO tremendous
support.
Preaching
the sermon during the occasion, Ven Ogechi Nwamadu thanked the United Nations
for setting aside a day to remember and celebrate the old people in the
society. While emphasizing on the theme of this year’s celebration - ‘Stepping
into the Future … Tapping The Talent, Contributions And Participation Of Older
Persons In Society’, the cleric decried the non-challant attitude of
governments at various levels towards the welfare of senior citizens,
especially in neglecting the efforts of the old people.
Ven
Nwamadu while frowning at the inability of the elderly to impact good moral
standards on the young people, thanked Off The Hook Foundation, HRH Eze Nwamara
and his Ugoeze for their efforts to remember and give succor to the old people
in the society.
He
congratulated the older people, adding that old age is a thing of joy and a
blessing, advising that young people should endeavour to always take good care
of the elderly, especially their health. He warned that any society that does
not take care of the old among them is a foolish one.
Continuing,
the cleric expressed joy that even when there is moral decadence in the
society, there are old people who were trained to know the good moral standards
of the good old days.
Ven
Nwamadu who is the Vicar of Obizi Archdeaconry in the Anglican Diocese of
Mbaise, remarked that the International Day for the Older Persons is a unique
one as it coincided with the first day in October, 2017 as well as Nigeria’s
57th Independence Day anniversary.
Highlight
of the event was the feeding of the old people by Off The Hook Foundation. The
old people also had a group photograph with HRH Eze and Ugoeze Mike Nwamara and
HRH Eze and Ugoeze Chris Nwamara of Azara Ubo Emekuku in Owerri North LGA of
Imo.
