Press Release: Not Too Young To Run Movement Response to Speaker Dogara

July 21, 2017
The Not Too Young To Run movement received with pleasure, the statement issued by the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara reaffirming his commitment and that of the House of representatives to the passage of the Not Too Young to Run bill seeking a removal of age limits in the requirement for Running for elective office as stated in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended. This is a testament that the House remains a people’s assembly. We hope the Senate will emulate the responsive character of the House and give a public account on the status of bill in the Senate within 24 hours.
While commending the speedy response of the House and its leadership to our statement issued on 19th July 2017 seeking clarification on the status of the bill, the Not Too Young Movement is requesting the House of Representatives to furnish us the title and further particulars of the amendment as presently labelled in the ongoing constitution review process.
As a movement, we are determined in our quest for a true people’s constitution anchored on the principles of inclusion, equality and justice. We therefore invite citizens to join us on July 25, 2017 for the National Day of Action on Not Too Young To Run as we engage our legislators and press home our demand ahead of the clause by clause voting on new amendments to the constitution. As the National Assembly prepares to vote on constitutional amendments next week, we urge our esteemed lawmakers to be guided by good conscience, equity and justice. The interests of the people must prevail. We urge citizens to be vigilant and reach out to their legislators to ensure the outcome of this constitution review process is a reflection of the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians.
While awaiting further communications, we extend our warmest regard and look forward to the eventual passage of the age removal clause as promised by Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara.
