Criticisms against many political parties due to ignorance – YPP Chieftain
The
criticism by some Nigerians against the registration of more political parties
ahead of the 2019 general elections has been described as ignorance by a
chieftain of one of the newly registered parties – Young Progressive Party
(YPP), in Imo State, Hon Chief Damian Ogu.
Speaking with our reporter
recently at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, Hon Ogu who is a former state
legislator said more political parties are needed because a lot of credible
people are short-changed by moneybags in the older political parties. According
to him there is no provision of independent candidacy in the nation’s electoral
laws and because of that there is need for more political space for
less-financially privileged individuals to exercise their fundamental rights.
Hon Ogu advocated that for there
to be few political parties in the nation, the president who is from the ruling
political party should not be the one to appoint the chairman of the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He stated that though people may
query what has become of the many political parties already registered that are
not functioning well, stressing that such political parties were registered by
individuals without any sound ideologies.
Continuing, Hon Ogu who is the
Chairman of YPP in Okigwe zone alleged that some of the already registered
political parties were registered by ruling parties to enhance their political
fortune, adding that a lot of the political space is controlled by moneybags
who are not credible.
The YPP chieftain revealed that
the newly registered political party has already penetrated the grassroots in
Okigwe as they were holding meetings as an association even before the party
was registered.
While boasting that if the
elections are scheduled to hold tomorrow, the YPP will emerge victorious as
they had already covered 50% grounds
towards electoral victory, he revealed that many had defected the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political
parties to the YPP.
